How to play Orrdle
The daily NHL player guessing game.
Orrdle is a daily guessing game about NHL players. One player is chosen for everybody, everywhere, each day. You have 8 tries to name them, and every guess you make is scored against the answer column by column - team, conference, division, position, shooting hand, height, weight, age and jersey number - so a wrong guess is still worth making.
There is nothing to install and no account to create. Your guesses, your streak and your settings are kept in your own browser.
Reading the grid
Guess the current NHL player in 8 tries.
Green in any column, indicates a match!
Yellow in the team column, indicates the mystery player at one point played for this team, but does not currently.
A new player will be available each day.
The numeric columns - height, weight, age and number - add an arrow. It points toward the answer, so an up arrow next to a six-foot guess means the mystery player is taller than that. Conference and division are worked out from the team the player is on today, which is why a trade can move a player between two columns that used to agree.
Yellow only ever appears in the team column, and it is the most useful colour on the board: it means the mystery player has worn that sweater at some point in their career without wearing it now. A journeyman guess early on can turn up several yellows at once and narrow the field faster than a green anywhere else.

The silhouette is the outline of the mystery player's headshot, and it gives away more than it looks like it does - build, stance, and sometimes the helmet. Turning it off is the difference between a puzzle you can sometimes recognise on sight and one you have to solve. The lock exists so hard mode means the same thing on everybody's shared grid.
Retro mode
Looking for a nostalgia? Guess players up to the 1982-1983 season!
Note: Silhouettes are only available past the 2015-2016 season.
Retro picks a season first and then a player who suited up in it, so the grid is scored against that season's rosters, divisions and conferences - Norris and Smythe, Wales and Campbell, the Nordiques and the North Stars. It is a different game from the daily, and stats are not recorded for it.
Arcade mode
Can't get enough of Orrdle? Play as long as you want! (Stats won't compile in Arcade mode)
Arcade draws a random player every round instead of the scheduled one. Nothing you do in it touches your daily streak, and results are never counted toward the global comparison, so it is the safe place to warm up before opening the day's puzzle.
