About Orrdle
What Orrdle is
Inspired by Wordle and Poeltl, Orrdle was made for a small group of friends who love hockey.
It grew into three games that share one pool of players and one daily reset: the guessing grid, Rush, and Journey.
All three are free, and none of them asks you to sign up for anything. There are no accounts on Orrdle at all - your guesses, your streak, your statistics and your settings are kept in your own browser's storage and never sent anywhere. That is also the trade-off: clear your browser data or switch devices and the streak is gone, because there is no copy on our side to restore.
The site can be installed to a home screen and played offline. It caches its own files to do that - the games, the logos and the player data - which is the same storage, on your device.
Where the data comes from
Players, teams, career paths and photographs come from the NHL's public API, so a puzzle always matches the real thing.
Career paths in Journey are built live rather than from a stored list, which is why a trade or a call-up shows up in the game as soon as it shows up in the league's own data. It also means the occasional oddity - a missing season, a franchise named the way the API names it - comes from upstream. Requests are relayed through our own proxy, so the NHL never sees your address directly.
Historical teams, divisions and conferences are resolved per season, so a 1980s puzzle is scored against the Norris and the Smythe rather than against today's map, and relocations follow the franchise rather than the city.
The daily puzzle
One puzzle a day, the same one for everybody, everywhere.
The day is counted as a number of calendar days rather than read off a clock, so the puzzle does not depend on your time zone and does not drift across daylight saving. When a game is finished it adds one anonymous tally to a counter - which puzzle, and how it went - and that is what the "how everyone else did" comparison is built from. Nothing identifying is attached to it, because there is nothing identifying to attach.
Who makes it
We also make GM Connected, a hockey manager game: run a franchise in an online league, build the roster, work the cap, draft, trade and play out the season.
Orrdle is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the National Hockey League or any NHL club. It is a fan project, and the league's names and marks are used only to identify the players and teams the games are about.
Contact
Questions, a correction to a puzzle, a bug, or a takedown request - email orrdle@hotmail.com and a person will read it. It is the same address on the privacy policy and the terms of use.
Corrections are worth sending. Most of what looks wrong in a puzzle comes from the NHL's own data, but not all of it, and we cannot see what you saw.
Supporting it
Orrdle is free and carries no charge of any kind. If you have enjoyed playing, there is a tip jar - it buys nothing extra, and the games are identical whether you use it or not.
Prepared with NhlApi, React-Icons and powered by React.
How to play
The rules for all three games are on the how to play pages, and what has changed lately is on updates.
